Bruno said that while the main road stretching from North to South is fine, the smaller roads across the island are apparently in a terrible condition.

We set off to drive the roughly 70km on roads with various conditions through villages bustling with life (both animals and humans) with people living in sometimes precarious conditions in ramshackle bamboo sheds, having to walk several kilometers to fetch water from a central well, without any electricity or plumbing. Apart from omnipresent mobile phones, it did feel a bit like a glimpse into Europe’s history a hundred years ago. What was remarkable, though, was that wherever you looked, you saw friendly people smiling brightly and waving back at us. In general, the people seemed much happier than at home, which probably should serve as a reminder for us spoilt Westerners that one does not need much to be happy and also that we should try to be a bit more grateful for the luxury in which we are all living…

We visited a holy site for the local tribe where once a year a Zebu, a local type of cow with a big hump on the back, is sacrificed on the shores of the ocean. A bit further, we took a refreshing swim in the water at a beautiful Sandy Beach, before continuing with our guide to some viewpoints and a tour through the village in which he lived. Again, the smiles of the locals accompanied us on our way. Then tried for a few kilometers to make our way to the East coast, but the condition of the “road” forced us to turn back after some time, as even with the offroad tyres of the quad, it was almost impossible to climb the steep road that was incredibly bumpy and muddy.

The next day we had signed up for a diving trip with a local dive center, despite some “experts” having told us that “the Chinese have emptied the ocean, there is nothing to see”. Quite the opposite, our first dive revealed a beautiful coral reef with a myriad of different colorful fishes, parrot fish, trigger fish, moray eel, puffer fish, even a scorpion fish and more and the dive was concluded by a gigantic grouper with about 200kg lurking below us while we got back to the surface. The second dive was somewhat less exciting but at least we happened to see a turtle hiding under a rock. After all this exhausting work, we treated ourselves with a massage in probably the most impromptu massage shop that we had ever been to, one of the masseuses had probably never given a massage before. It was relaxing nevertheless and funny for sure. 😀

The next morning we had to get up at 3.15 to catch our ferry at 4.30 back to the mainland where our driver Rado already waited for us. We got back on the road towards the Southwest of the island and stopped over again in Andasibe. On the way, Rado told us that when passing through Antananarivo, he will be replaced with a different driver as his expert skills are needed somewhere else. 😪 Let’s hope that his replacement can live up to the high expectations that Rado has set!

DeepL.com/Translator<img loading="lazy" decoding="async"
