Many have warned us that it is not safe there, so we decided to join a guided tour for exploring the city rather than driving around on our own. Our tour guide showed us the stadium where the first and last game of the FIFA World Cup 2010 took place. Then we continued to the main part of the tour, a visit to Soweto (short for South-West Township) where a large amount of non-white folks where forcefully moved to during Apartheid. We visited Nelson Mandelas old house and the memorial place where demonstrating (non-white) students were shot by the police, which significantly intensified the dramatic events in those days. Soweto is, for those who watch The Daily Show, also where Trevor Noah was born and raised. We got to see more of the contrasts between the rich and the poor in South Africa in one of the shanty towns. It is heartbreaking to see how poor many are, especially when their neighbours “next door” are living in luxury. We visited a day care which takes care of over 50 kids in a tiny shack of about 20sqm. Nevertheless, the kids seemed happy and even sang a song for us. At least their parents have a job to go to, and therefore they probably are not even the ones that are worst off…

In the afternoon we continued with a visit to the Apartheid museum. During the two hours we had we almost managed to go through just half of the museum. With a lot of information, in parts a bit confusing to follow, the visit still gave us much better understanding of and a horrifying glimpse into this cruel part of South African history. In the evening we continued the theme by watching the movie A Long Walk to Freedom about Nelson Mandela’s life and his unprecedented struggle for peace and equality – the movie is really worth seeing!

The last days in South Africa we spent in Johannesburg, where we arrived after driving more than 4’100km in three weeks.
