After a recommendation of Peter we drove up to Langebaan, located at the Atlantic north west of Cape Town, known for its good windsurfing and lately also kite surfing. On the way there, we stopped in the lovely wine farm La Motte for a delicious 4-course lunch menu in beautiful scenery. In Langebaan, we stayed in a cute b&b next to a golf court populated with copious amounts of gemsbok roaming the greens. The owners were a lovely elderly couple who welcomed us with lots of stories to tell and delicious breakfast.<\/p>\n

On our first kite day we went to Shark Bay, ensuring, of course, that the name wasn’t apropos… Luckily, white sharks prefer the warmer waters at the south coast in the Indian Ocean, so the only thing nibbling at our feet were little mini crabs and fish. All geared up in wet suits, impact wests and helmets, we were ready to start. First we learned how to set up the kite, which we brought with us some hundred meters out in the knee deep waters. Second, we learned how to manage the kite with first one and then both hands, before starting the body dragging. That basically means that you let the kite drag you forward in the waters, for Kata including some none expected jumps and swallowing mouthfuls of sea water. Lots of fun! Tobi even got to try out getting on the board, which is lots harder than a snowboard…<\/p>\n

Our second kite day unfortunately got cancelled due to too little wind. Instead we decided to explore the peninsula and drove to the nearby national park. There we went for a short hike where we saw ostriches, flamingos, and other birds, as well as eland, massive cowlike deer.<\/p>\n

Auf Empfehlung von Peter fuhren wir nach Langebaan, im atlantischen Nordwesten von Kapstadt gelegen, bekannt f\u00fcr sein gutes Windsurfen und in letzter Zeit auch Kitesurfen. Auf dem Weg dorthin hielten wir im sch\u00f6nen Weingut La Motte f\u00fcr ein k\u00f6stliches 4-Gang-Mittagsmen\u00fc in sch\u00f6ner Landschaft. In Langebaan \u00fcbernachteten wir in einem niedlichen B&B neben einem Golfplatz, der mit reichlich Edelsteinb\u00f6cken bev\u00f6lkert ist, die die Gr\u00fcns durchstreifen. Die Besitzer waren ein nettes \u00e4lteres Paar, das uns mit vielen Geschichten und einem k\u00f6stlichen Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck begr\u00fc\u00dfte.<\/p>\n

An unserem ersten Kitetag fuhren wir nach Shark Bay und sorgten nat\u00fcrlich daf\u00fcr, dass der Name nicht passend war… Gl\u00fccklicherweise bevorzugen Wei\u00dfhaie das w\u00e4rmere Wasser an der S\u00fcdk\u00fcste des Indischen Ozeans. Das Einzige, was uns zu F\u00fc\u00dfen knabberte, waren also kleine Minikrabben und Fische. Alles in Neoprenanz\u00fcgen, Schlagwesten und Helmen, wir waren bereit zu starten. Zuerst lernten wir, wie man den Drachen aufrichtet, den wir einige hundert Meter im knietiefen Wasser mitgenommen haben. Zweitens lernten wir, wie man den Kite mit zuerst einem und dann mit beiden H\u00e4nden bedient, bevor man mit dem Body Dragging begann. Das bedeutet im Grunde genommen, dass du dich vom Drachen im Wasser nach vorne ziehen l\u00e4sst, denn die Kata beinhaltet einige unerwartete Spr\u00fcnge und das Schlucken von Meerwasser. Viel Spa\u00df dabei! Tobi konnte sogar versuchen, auf das Board zu steigen, was viel schwieriger ist als ein Snowboard…<\/p>\n

Unser zweiter Kitetag wurde leider wegen zu wenig Wind abgesagt. Stattdessen beschlossen wir, die Halbinsel zu erkunden und fuhren in den nahegelegenen Nationalpark. Dort machten wir eine kurze Wanderung, wo wir Strau\u00dfe, Flamingos und andere V\u00f6gel sowie Elenantilopen, massive kuh\u00e4hnliche Hirsche sahen.<\/p>\n
