It&#8217;s a green hilly region with grasslands full of cows and sheep, but instead of the mountains of the Alps, the backdrop here are glacier covered volcanoes, beautiful! Some hundred years ago the Chilean government &#8220;imported&#8221; many Germans here for their farming and engineering skills and gave them free land. And even today, some Germanic influence can be seen on words (Kuchen, Kinder, etc. are proper words here), street names, architecture, beer quality, and food such as deer with red cabbage or even <i>R\u00f6sti<\/i>. The B&amp;B where we stayed was fittingly called <i>Casa Alemana<\/i> and promised proper German breakfast. Unsurprisingly, the grandfather of Armin (the owner) had emigrated from Prussia to Chile in 1902 and Armin continued to speak some German with us.<\/p>\n<p>To explore the surrounding nature we visited two more of the national parks (besides Villarica with the volcano), Huerquehue and Conguill\u00edo, the second being even more amazing than the first. A special sight here are the Araucania trees that really are quite spectacular, and rightfully have given their name to the region. Then again, pictures say more then words, so here you go&#8230;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Deutsche \u00dcbersetzung:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wir haben gerade drei Tage in der Region Araukanien um Villarica verbracht, die von einigen als die Schweiz Chiles bezeichnet wird &#8211; und das zu Recht. Es ist eine gr\u00fcne H\u00fcgellandschaft mit Grasland voller K\u00fche und Schafe, aber statt der Berge der Alpen sind hier Gletscher-Vulkane die Kulisse, wundersch\u00f6n! Vor einigen hundert Jahren &#8220;importierte&#8221; die chilenische Regierung viele Deutsche wegen ihrer landwirtschaftlichen und technischen F\u00e4higkeiten hierher und gab ihnen freies Land. Und auch heute noch ist ein gewisser germanischer Einfluss auf W\u00f6rter (Kuchen, Kinder, etc. sind hier richtige W\u00f6rter), Stra\u00dfennamen, Architektur, Bierqualit\u00e4t und Essen wie Hirsch mit Rotkohl oder sogar R\u00f6sti zu erkennen. Das B&amp;B, in dem wir \u00fcbernachteten, hie\u00df passend Casa Alemana und versprach ein ordentliches deutsches Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck. Kein Wunder, dass der Gro\u00dfvater von Armin (dem Besitzer) 1902 von Preu\u00dfen nach Chile ausgewandert war und Armin weiterhin etwas Deutsch mit uns sprach.<\/p>\n<p>Um die umliegende Natur zu erkunden, besuchten wir zwei weitere Nationalparks (neben Villarica mit dem Vulkan), Huerquehue und Conguill\u00edo, wobei der zweite noch erstaunlicher war als der erste. Ein besonderer Anblick sind die Araukanienb\u00e4ume, die wirklich spektakul\u00e4r sind und der Region zu Recht ihren Namen gegeben haben.
